The 9th Congress on Electronic Structure: Principles and Applications (ESPA), will be held in Badajoz (Extremadura, Spain) from the 2nd to the 4th of July 2014.
The ESPA conferences, initiated in 1998, have been held every two years and cover all major fields of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry. The previous ESPA editions were organized in Madrid (1998), San Sebastián (2000), Sevilla (2002), Valladolid (2004), Santiago de Compostela (2006), Palma de Mallorca (2008), Oviedo (2010) and Barcelona (2012). These conferences were initially intended to bring together the Spanish Theoretical and Computational Chemistry community. They have grown over time (both in national and international participation), thereby evolving into a key event with international reputation in the field.
The conference encompasses plenary lectures, oral communications and posters presentations. All participants are invited to submit an abstract for an oral communication or a poster.
Proceedings of the conference will be published in Theoretical Chemistry Accounts upon the usual peer-review process. Details on how to submit the manuscript to the journal will be conveniently provided.
We hope to meet you in Badajoz between the 2nd and the 4th of July 2014.
Previous to the ESPA2014 the Third Annual Workshop of the Joint Doctorate Program on Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modelling (TCCM) (http://www.emtccm.org/tccm-jd/) will take place the 1st of July in the Faculty of Sciences, Universidad de Extremadura.
The European XFEL Users’ Meeting 2015 will be held at DESY Hamburg on 28 – 30 January 2015. The meeting will be organized jointly with the DESY Photon Science Users’ Meeting 2015.

HOTEL ACCOMMODATION / TOURISM TAX
When booking your hotel accommodation, you should mention that you are a visitor to European XFEL / DESY. Otherwise you might be asked to pay a tourism tax on your hotel bill. A list of hotels can be found on the meeting website.
The 3rd XLIC General Meeting will include also the 2nd Young Scientist Forum (YSF) – a special half-day with talks given by young researchers (PhD students and post-docs). The talk format will be 15 minutes + 5 minutes of discussion.
Seven young speakers will be selected by the young scientific committee on the basis of the submitted abstracts. The presenting author should attach also a short CV (including information about education, oral presentations and publications). For YSF talk, an abstract has to be submitted before September 15th, 2015.
Moreover, during the meeting, two special poster sessions are foreseen in order to exchange views and stimulate discussion on research topics, and to support interdisciplinary communication between the researchers. All young researchers participating in the XLIC General Meeting are encouraged to present a talk and/or poster.
The length of the abstract is limited to one A4 page, including figures and tables (see http://xlic.unideb.hu/abstracts).
The selection of young speakers will be announced on September 25th, 2015.
The Workshop on Imaging with Femtosecond Electrons and X-ray pulses (IFEXS) will be held on February 1-3, 2016 at the Savoia Excelsior Palace in Trieste.
The workshop, jointly organized by CNR-IOM within the NFFA-Trieste facility programme and EPFL-Lausanne, aims to discuss the next frontier of ultrafast science regarding the advances of both electrons and photons based techniques with a special focus on the necessary cross-feeding between them.
Emphasis will be put on the complementary aspects of ultrafast electron microscopy and X-FEL based diffractive imaging techniques and on the future perspective of broadening the applicability of these tools by considering X-rays also as a chemically selective photo excitation and combining fs-X-ray beams with fs electron beams in an ad hoc modified Transmission Electron Microscope.
The program will comprise invited keynote lectures and poster presentations.
The workshop is open to all contributions (from theoretical, experimental, and simulation methods).
Deadline for submission of a two page abstract is January 7, 2016. Notification acceptance of poster presentation will be sent by January 13.
Registration is due by January 20, 2016.

The 2nd COST XLIC Working Group 3 Meeting – Control of Chemical Reactivity will be held at Queen’s University Belfast, on 4th – 5th April 2016.
Scope of the meeting:
The topic of interest of the XLIC Working Group 3 (WG3) is to control the reactivity of highly excited and/or ionized molecules through pump-probe techniques and High Harmonic spectroscopy, i.e., to control electron transfer, isomerization and dissociation with attosecond temporal and sub-Angstrom spatial resolution.
Specific areas addressed by the WG are:
* Development and application of optimal control theory (OCT)
* Use of time-resolved pump-probe techniques to control process relevant to atmospheric chemistry or biomolecules
* Development and use of current theories to treat the dynamics of pump-probe experiments
* Study of the response of molecular systems irradiated by strong fields
The 2nd WG3 meeting will be hosted by Queen’s University Belfast over two full days (4th-5th April 2016) with contributions from invited speakers and young scientists, including a poster session.
The meeting will be held in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Queen’s University Belfast. The University is about 15 minutes walk from the City Centre and there are a number hotels in the area. While there are direct flights from European cities to Belfast International Airport (Paris, Vienna, Prague, Pisa, Geneva, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Krakow, Nice, Split), Dublin is accessible from many more cities and there is a regular bus connection to Belfast (2 hours).

Invited speakers (and some selected participants) who had received an invitation to be reimbursed, can claim their travel and subsistence expenses in accordance to COST rules.
Participants are advised to check COST Vademecum (pages 20-24) before incurring on any expense and to take into account that the flat rate for accomodation has been reduced to 100 EUR.

– check the supporting documents you should provide in case you are travelling to and from countries other than that where the approved meeting is being held and the country where you are residing. The WG1 Expert Meeting on ‘Frontiers in attosecond theory: from atoms to molecules to solids’’ has been approved by the COST Management Committee. The workshop will take place in Han-sur-Lesse (The Ardennes, Belgium) on April 4-8, 2016, at the Domain des Masures.
The chair of the organizing committee is Prof. Bernard Piraux.
The meeting will cover the following topics:
– hole dynamics in inner/valence shells of atoms/molecules
– ultrafast response to electron removal in solids
– ultrafast dynamics in chiral systems
– theoretical methods for ultrafast dynamics

2nd MOLIM Training School: Advanced technics for molecular spectroscopy and dynamics
The 2nd MOLIM Training School focuses on the recent experimental developments occurred in the field of molecular spectroscopy and reaction dynamics. World-wide experts working in European country will be invited to present the most relevant state-of-the-art techniques and their applications. The trainees will benefit from visits of the brand new laser servers ATTOLAB and CILEX as well as of the synchrotron SOLEIL. By team of 2 to 3 trainees, the students will be involved in a laboratory project hosted in several laboratories of the Paris-Saclay University.
The registration is open to Master students, Ph.D students, post-docs and permanent scientist from all European countries. Affiliation to the COST MOLIM is not required to participate to this school. The school can welcome up to 40 Europeans trainees and 10 more students from Paris region.

The International school on “The Frontiers of Attosecond and Ultrafast X-ray Science” will be held from 19th to 28th March 2017 in Erice, Sicily, Italy.
The primary objective of this new school is to educate the next generation of scientists who will impact the future of attosecond and ultrafast x-ray science. We anticipate that the school will meet on a regular basis every two years and become a foundation for the ultrafast community. Consequently, the main topics of the course are the following: (i) attosecond science and technology, devoted to the generation and application of attosecond pulses to the investigation of electronic dynamics in atoms, molecules, nanostructures and condensed phases; (ii) fundamentals, methods and applications of free electron lasers, synchrotron radiation, ion collisions in atomic and molecular science. Lectures will cover current developments in theory and experiments but are also intended to give the basics of the field.

Photoinitiated processes are not only important for understanding natural phenomena but they also play an undeniable role in the booming fields of renewable energy, material design and medicine. Excited state processes have traditionally been explained from a static point of view, delivering in some cases a biased, incorrect or even incomplete description of the former. The simulation of the dynamics of such processes is therefore fundamental for the quest to understand the chemical and physical mechanisms.
The purpose of this school is to introduce its participants to state-of-the-art methodologies for the simulation of the dynamics of processes in the excited state, following the evolution in time of photoinitiated reactions, one of the priority topics of this call.
The school will be focused in simulating the dynamics of complex molecules. Electronic ab initio or TD-DFT methods would be sketched for obtaining the electronic wavefunctions or densities, that would be afterwards quantum-mechanically propagated. Moreover, several approaches for the treatment of the nuclei will be also provided, from full quantum dynamics to mixed quantum-classical dynamics.
The course is directed at PhD students, and young researchers, beginners in the field, working in theoretical chemistry and molecular physics.

The scientific workshop: “Massive Computation for Ultrafast Molecular Breaking” (MACUMB 2017) will be held in the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain) on 25th and 26th of May 2017.
The scientific program (http://www.macumb.info/programme.html) includes ten invited talks that will be combined with two 3-hours practical sessions in computer rooms. We aim to bring together developers of the state-of-the-art scientific software in the field of quantum chemistry and molecular physics.
